Visiting with a client yesterday, we discussed a question that is frequently asked about older women with long hair. She said, "That would be a great blog post, Mary."
So, here we go. The internet is full of answers to this question, but I'll throw in my two cents worth, just for fun.
I consider beauty to be more than skin deep. Everything on the visible outside of ourselves relate to what is on the inside. In many ways.
1. Detrimental health issues take their tole on us, and can wreak havoc with what we see from the mirrors reflection.
2. A lack of confidence in oneself will do the same
3. An attitude of indifference, which also comes from the heart of a person.
These things will give an appearance of wrong choices for how we look, when in fact, the root of the matter is much deeper than what is perceived. My personal opinion is that any woman who feels beautiful, is indeed a beautiful woman.
Even though I am a part of the beauty industry, I will never try to entice a confident woman to change her appearance…until she is ready for something fresh and new. So, even those with beautiful white or silvery grey hair (and/or long hair) need never fear my insisting they cover it up with a chemical color service or shorten it. I MAY suggest a color, if it would improve skin tone and/or cause them to feel younger. I may even suggest a shorter style, if I think it would improve their over-all appearance. But coercing is not an option I give in to.
Some of the reasons I may ask a client to consider a much shorter haircut would be:
1. Thinning Hair (causes one to look witchy)
2. Droopy Face Muscles (long hair drags the appearance of the face downward)
3. Inability to keep it taken care of (ends become split and hair easily tangles)
4. Previous chemical services have damaged the cuticle of the hair causing a lot of breakage (again…witchy)
Here are a couple of pictures for you to decide if long hair belongs on an older woman. Let me know what you think about the two. Is there a difference? What is that difference? Has your opinion changed about older women with long hair?
